Kongakut River – June – Richard Silva

Hi Richard,

Here is a cart of goods for your Kongakut River trip this June. The Kongakut, along with other arctic rivers, is home to grayling and char. They are often found in pockets along the way and a feeder stream coming into the main river is a prime location to try. Tributaries are often good camp spots so you should have plenty of opportunity to fish. 

Arctic char are predatory and will attack a variety of different prey such as fry, leeches and even small char. The flies from the beginning of the list down through the Lead Eye Egg Sucking Leeches are all prime char flies. All except the Mini Mr. Hankey (which is a mouse imitation) are subsurface streamers. You can swing them or strip retrieve them. I've sized the flies so you can cast them with your 6 weight rod. 

Grayling are trout-like in their tastes and will eat bugs so dry flies and nymphs are the name of the game.  I've included a variety of dry flies that grayling love along with a few nymphs in case they won't come to the surface. 

After that, I included a 5 foot loop on sink tip that you can add to the end of your floating line in case you need to get the flies deeper. Polyleaders are handy to have along and don't take up much space or weight compared to a spare spool with a sink tip line. Finally, I put in a 3-pack of 10lb salmon leaders for fishing the streamers and 3-pack of 4x leaders for fishing the dries and nymphs. Each has a spool of matching tippet. 

I didn't put any bug head nets or things of that nature on the list. I do have some great hats with bug nets built in, bugstopper hoodies, and head nets. You can see them here.
