Alrighty king salmon fans, this is the week to get out there and chase some big chromers! The weather looks good, the saltwater beaches have cleared up so fish can actually see your fly, and mid June is historically when we see the first good push of kings to the area.
Anglers have been picking up a fish here and there the last week. This is a good sign since early June is always spotty in terms of fish numbers and the conditions weren't in our favor. So a tip of the hat to those who got out there and gave it a go. This weekend and the rest of June are the prime king window. We are looking at some big tide swings (around 18') going into this weekend. These are ideal for pushing fish into the channel, Lena Cove, Fish Creek and other fly accessible areas.
There is somewhere to fish on just about every tide. Lena Cove and Auke Creek are best on the low end of the tide. Fish Creek is best just after high tide and then as the tide drops out. The beaches in front of Bayview are good in the middle of the tide on either a flood or a drop. If you have questions about gear and tackle swing in the shop and we can help you get lined out. We've built a bunch more Grab & Go King Fly Selections in either 6 fly or 12 fly configurations. Pick one up on your way out fishing!
And if your king set up needs an upgrade or you want to jump in the game, we have our Getting Started King Package or the Alaska Ready King package to get you out on the water with a dependable 9 or 10 weight rod & reel.
One other gear note to keep in mind; those couple of warm days we had recently kicked the no-see-um crop into overdrive. If you are heading out to king fish (especially at Fish Creek) make sure you have a No-See-Um Head Net at the very least and if you want to keep them off the back of your hands grab a pair of Sun & Bug Gloves. You'll be glad you did....
Now it has nothing to do with king salmon, but you have to check out one of the best cutthroat trout photos we've seen in a long time. Angler Dylan Sowa was at an alpine lake last week and caught this unbelievable cutthroat trout. They don't get much bigger than that and he couldn't have caught it on a more beautiful S.E. Alaska day. Nice job Dylan!
Happy weekend and we'll see you out there.
