6/27/2024 Fishing Report

Don't worry this king was caught before the season closed.  It's ok to be jealous also, we are.

Every year there is a little lull in the action around town and it seems like that lull is happening now.  The Dollies have spread out quite a bit and are starting to move back into the fresh water.  Dollies will stage in deep slow-moving pools to await the salmon spawn.  During this time small leeches, baitfish and sculpin patterns are the best producing flies.  The low water is making fishing pretty challenging so stealth will help you get a couple more bites.  Try fishing with a 3/0 split shot in front of your fly for the best results.

Saturday is the last day for sockeye at Windfall, if you want to give it a shot then you have one more chance to give it a go.  The water is low and the fish are spooky, getting there early or staying there late will be the best shot at getting your fish.

Chum salmon continue to be around, mostly north of town.  The Shrine, Lena Cove, and Amalga harbor have all been producing some salmon.  There are a few kings mixed in with the chums at Lena and retention is still allowed there.  If chums won't chase bigger flies, try downsizing and fishing something smaller under and indicator.  These fish can get surprisingly picky.

We have just in the last couple days started hearing about pinks in Echo Cove.  This is usually the first place they show up on the road system.  The high tide out there can be really good from the boat launch down the beach.  They may not be up that far just yet, but it shouldn't be long.  I know nobody wants to hear the r word, but we need just a little!

As always, we love featuring your photos for our fishing reports.  If you have a great fish, scenery, or action photo that has to do with fishing around town send it our way!  You can email photos or videos to cory@alaskaflyfishinggoods.com.  Please remember to handle fish with care, especially if you are practicing catch and release.  Consider getting a net with a rubber basket to help land fish quickly, pinch your barbs and keep them in the water until you are ready to snap a quick photo.

See you on the water!
