7/13/2023 Fishing Report
Bead season is officially upon us! Now that the pinks and chums are moving up into the freshwater it's time to start rolling beads to hungry Dollies. There will be a few Dollies lingering in the saltwater for a bit longer, but more and more will be making their way back into the creeks around town. This time of year is a lot of fun, because while Dollies are starting to key in on eggs, they will also hit streamers. Sculpzillas, Tungsten Mini Dolly Llamas, and AK Clousers are all great patterns to throw in the creeks before the Dollies really start to ignore flies for salmon eggs. Early in the run, fish fresh egg colors with a little bit of BnR polish is the ticket for a fish every cast. Tangerine, montana, natural, and orange clear beads in 10 or 8mm are all great colors for the early bead season.
Pinks will be available out in the salt water for a few more weeks, even as they pile into the freshwater around town. Echo Cove, Shrine of St. Therese, and Thane are all great spots for salmon. There are still a few kings around, but we are about at the end of the run. Reports of people catching kings have really tapered off so this will be the last report of the year to mention them. If you do want to try to get one more king, we recommend trying some darker flies in blacks, blues, purples and reds.
As always, we love featuring your photos for our fishing reports. If you have a great fish, scenery, or action photo that has to do with fishing around town send it our way! You can email photos or videos to cory@alaskaflyfishinggoods.com. Please remember to handle fish with care, especially if you are practicing catch and release. Consider getting a net with a rubber basket to help land fish quickly and keep them in the water until you are ready to snap a quick photo.
See you on the water!
