Swing flies for ocean-fresh coho in one of the most remote fisheries in Alaska

This September, Alaska Fly Fishing Goods is hosting a small group trip to Sapsuk River Camp on the lower Alaska Peninsula — a river often called the Last Frontier of the Last Frontier. No roads. No crowds. Pure fly fishing solitude.

The Sapsuk is a clear, easy-to-wade river with long slots, soft edges, and classic tailouts built for the swing. These silver salmon arrive straight from the ocean aggressive, powerful, and ready to grab.

One of the highlights of this week is the opportunity to fish coho with two-handed rods. If you’ve wanted to learn Spey casting or refine your technique, this is the place. The casts don’t need to be long, and the fish are abundant enough that missed grabs often turn into second chances. It’s a rare opportunity to build real two-handed confidence while actively catching fish.

Bring your 9’ rod as well — stripping flies and chugging surface poppers is part of the fun. Switching between single-hand and two-handed rods keeps every day fresh and engaging.

While the focus is coho, there are opportunities to fish for rainbows and dollies and toward the end of the week we may even see the first of the Sapsuk’s legendary fall steelhead.

AFFG owner Brad Elfers will host the week, offering casting help, gear demos, tackle advice, and adding to the evening camaraderie.

Opportunities like this don’t come around often — a peak-season week on one of Alaska’s most unique coho rivers.
