July & August in S.E. Alaska is prime pink salmon, chum salmon and Dolly Varden fishing. Pink salmon are a favorite target as they are scrappy fighters and willing biters. A pink Humpy Hooker or Searunner Special stripped slowly will take pinks off the beach or in the intertidal area. If you are fishing freshwater and the river is running strong, a larger profile pattern such as a Starlite Leech, Sandy Candy or Lead Eye Egg Sucking Leech is a good bet. Chum salmon will take these offerings as well and will put up a dogged fight.
The Dolly Varden have returned from the saltwater to follow the salmon up the creeks and gorge on stray salmon eggs. Fishing an Unreal Egg, BH Gorman Egg or Billy's Crystal Egg behind spawning chum will lead to plenty of action. You may need to place a small split shot 18" up your leader to help get the egg pattern down deep.
Another option for Dolly Varden fishing is to use beads instead of egg patterns. Beads are more effective, less damaging to trout since they don't inhale them, and once you get the hang of it they are easy to rig. If you are interested in trying out beads take a look at our SE Starter Bead Kit.
