May & June are considered early season in Southeast Alaska. The salmon fry (baby salmon) are leaving the freshwater and desperately trying to avoid marauding Dolly Varden and Sea Run Cutthroat Trout.
These flies are all versions of salmon fry and are most effectively fished at creek mouths or along saltwater beaches. A quick retrieve will often elicit violent strikes from trout and Dollies. We suggest a stout leader such as the 9 foot 2X (10lb) trout leader shown in the list.
Some areas will also have steelhead in the month of May. If you want to pursue these elusive fish, send us an email and we can suggest flies for chasing them. By and large there are no salmon in the streams in May and June.
